LSAT Method of Reasoning Questions: How to Describe the Argument's Structure

LSAT Method of Reasoning questions ask you to identify HOW an argument works — its logical structure — rather than whether it's true or valid. The correct answer describes the argument's technique in abstract terms (e.g., 'appeals to an analogy,' 'infers a general rule from a specific case'). You win these by ignoring the topic entirely, tracking the role each sentence plays, and matching your description to the answer that fits — not the one that sounds sophisticated.

Most LSAT questions ask you to evaluate an argument — is it flawed, what does it assume, what would strengthen it. Method of Reasoning questions ask something different and oddly detached: what did the author DO? Not whether it worked. Not whether it's true. Just the technique. You're a play-by-play announcer describing the moves, not a referee deciding who won.

That shift in mindset is the whole game. Students who try to judge these arguments — 'well, that's a bad analogy' — lose time and pick wrong answers. Students who simply narrate the structure clean up. This guide teaches you to narrate.

What Method of Reasoning Questions Test

The underlying skill is abstract structural description: taking a concrete argument about zoning law or antibiotic resistance and stripping it down to its logical skeleton. The LSAT wants to know if you can see that two arguments about wildly different topics can share the exact same structure.

Consider: 'Since every swan I've seen is white, all swans are white' and 'Since every meeting I've attended ran late, all meetings run late.' Different topics, identical move — a hasty generalization from limited observations to a universal claim. Method of Reasoning questions live in that abstraction layer. The correct answer will say something like 'draws a general conclusion from a limited sample,' and it won't mention swans or meetings at all.

This is why these questions reward a very specific habit: describing what you read in structural, topic-free language as you go. If you can already say to yourself 'okay, she gave two examples, then generalized' — the answer choices become easy to match.

How to Recognize Them

The stems are usually transparent. Watch for:

  • 'The argument proceeds by...'
  • 'The author responds to the objection by...'
  • 'The reasoning in the argument does which one of the following?'
  • 'The method the author uses to advance the conclusion is that of...'
  • 'Which one of the following most accurately describes the technique of reasoning used?'

There's an important sub-type worth flagging: the argument-and-counterargument format, where you're asked how one speaker responds to another (e.g., 'Marina responds to Devi by...'). The skill is identical — describe the move — but you have to be crystal clear about who did what. We'll cover that below.

Also distinguish Method of Reasoning from its cousin, Role/Function questions ('The claim that X plays which role?'). Role questions ask about ONE statement's job. Method questions ask about the WHOLE argument's technique. Same muscle, different scope.

The Method

Here's the four-step attack. Do steps 1–2 before you touch the answer choices.

  1. Find the conclusion. What is the author ultimately trying to get you to believe? Bracket it. Everything else is in service of it (or, in counterargument questions, is the opposing view).
  2. Tag the role of every other statement. Premise? Example? Analogy? Concession? Attack on another position? Say it in plain, abstract words: 'This sentence is an example. This one restates the opponent's view. This one draws the conclusion.'
  3. Compose a one-line abstract summary. Something like: 'The author cites two studies, then generalizes to all cases.' Or: 'The author undermines a claim by pointing out the source's bias.' This is your pre-phrase.
  4. Match, don't evaluate. Go to the answers and find the one that describes YOUR summary. Reject any answer that describes a move the argument didn't make — even if that move would have been reasonable.

The discipline in step 4 is where points are won. The test writers fill the answer set with descriptions of perfectly plausible argumentative techniques — techniques this particular argument simply didn't use. Your only job is fidelity to the text.

The Common Traps

Four wrong-answer patterns account for the vast majority of misses:

Trap 1: The 'Didn't Happen' answer

Describes a legitimate technique the argument never used. 'Appeals to expert testimony' — but no expert was cited. 'Refutes a position by presenting a counterexample' — but no counterexample appeared. These are tempting because they sound like things arguments do. Test them against the actual text, word by word.

Trap 2: The half-right answer

The first clause matches; the second doesn't (or vice versa). 'Establishes a claim by citing evidence and then dismisses an alternative explanation.' Maybe it cited evidence — but did it dismiss an alternative? If half the answer is wrong, the whole answer is wrong. There are no partial credit answers on the LSAT.

Trap 3: The reversed roles

Especially in counterargument questions. The answer describes what Speaker B did as if Speaker A did it, or swaps premise and conclusion. 'Attacks the assumption underlying the opposing view' when actually the speaker attacked the evidence, not the assumption. Read the direction carefully.

Trap 4: The evaluation smuggled in

An answer that describes a flaw ('relies on an unrepresentative sample') when the question asks for method, not flaw. Sometimes the argument IS flawed, and the flaw-flavored answer is even correct — but often it isn't. Answer the question that's asked: describe the move neutrally unless the correct choice genuinely captures the technique.

Bonus trap: overly strong description words

'Proves,' 'demonstrates conclusively,' 'establishes definitively.' If the argument merely offers support, an answer claiming it 'proves' the conclusion overshoots. Watch the verbs.

Worked Example

(An original question in the LSAT style — not a real LSAC question.)

Critic: Proponents of the new bridge design claim it will reduce commute times because computer simulations predict smoother traffic flow. But these same proponents ran the simulations themselves, and they stand to profit handsomely if the design is approved. We should therefore be skeptical of the claim that the bridge will improve commutes.

The critic's argument proceeds by

(A) offering an alternative explanation for the observed traffic patterns
(B) questioning a conclusion by casting doubt on the impartiality of those who produced its supporting evidence
(C) demonstrating that the computer simulations contained a mathematical error
(D) generalizing from a small number of cases to a broad conclusion
(E) attacking the proponents' character to show that the bridge design is unsafe

Work it: The critic's conclusion is 'we should be skeptical of the claim that the bridge will improve commutes.' How does the critic get there? By noting that the proponents both ran the simulations AND stand to profit — i.e., they have a financial motive that undermines the trustworthiness of their evidence. That's the move: casting doubt on the source's impartiality.

(B) is correct. It describes exactly that — questioning a conclusion by attacking the impartiality of the people who produced the supporting evidence.

Why the others fail:

  • (A) — Didn't happen. The critic offered no alternative explanation for traffic; the critic questioned the evidence's source.
  • (C) — Didn't happen. The critic never claimed the simulations had a math error, only that the people who ran them were biased.
  • (D) — Didn't happen. No sample size, no generalization here.
  • (E) — Half-right and reversed scope. The critic does note the proponents' motive, but the conclusion is about whether the bridge will improve commutes, not whether it's unsafe. Wrong conclusion described. This is a classic half-match trap.

Notice how none of this required deciding whether the critic's reasoning was good. (Arguably it commits a source-based flaw — biased people can still produce accurate simulations.) But the question asked HOW, not whether. We just described the move.

A Few to Try

Work these before reading the explanations below (they're in practice_items). All original, LSAT-style.

  1. A biologist argues that a competing hypothesis must be false because if it were true, we would observe a phenomenon we've never actually observed. What's the technique?
  2. A columnist responds to an opponent by conceding a minor point but arguing it doesn't affect the main issue. What's the technique?
  3. An economist supports a general principle by walking through a single detailed hypothetical scenario. What's the technique?

How to Drill This Type

Method of Reasoning questions reward volume plus a specific review habit. Do this:

  • Pre-phrase every time. Before looking at answers, write (or say) a one-sentence abstract description of the argument's move. Compare it to the correct answer afterward. The gap between your phrase and the credited answer is your training data.
  • Keep a 'technique dictionary.' These arguments recycle a finite set of moves: analogy, counterexample, appeal to authority, source attack, general-to-specific, specific-to-general, ruling out alternatives, drawing a distinction, conditional chaining. Learn the vocabulary the answer choices use so you recognize it fast.
  • Review misses by trap type. Were you fooled by a 'didn't happen' answer, a half-match, or a reversed role? Patterns in your errors tell you exactly what to fix.

Remember the format: the current LSAT (since August 2024) has two scored Logical Reasoning sections and one scored Reading Comprehension section, plus an unscored section, scored 120–180. Method of Reasoning questions appear in both LR sections. Logic Games no longer exists on the test — ignore any prep material that still lists it.
