LSAT Evaluate questions ask you to identify which piece of information would be most useful for judging whether an argument is strong or weak. The correct answer is a question or fact whose answer would either strengthen or weaken the argument depending on how it comes out — meaning it matters to the conclusion in both directions. Evaluate questions are the LSAT's quiet outlier. You might sit through an entire Logical Reasoning section and see just one — or none at all. That rarity fools a lot of test-takers into skipping them in prep entirely. Bad move. Because they show up so infrequently, when one does appear it often catches people off guard, and they burn 90 seconds fumbling with an unfamiliar prompt. The good news: the underlying skill is one you're already building. If you can find an argument's assumption, you can crack any Evaluate question in about 30 seconds. This guide gives you the exact method, the trap patterns, and original practice to lock it in.

What Evaluate Questions Test

Every Evaluate question hands you an argument with a gap — a leap from evidence to conclusion that depends on some unstated assumption. Your job is not to strengthen or weaken the argument directly. Instead, you're asked: what would you most want to know to judge whether this argument holds up?

The correct answer is always a question (or a fact that functions like a question) whose answer would change how you view the argument. The key insight: the right choice is relevant in both directions. If the answer to the question comes out one way, the argument gets stronger; if it comes out the other way, the argument gets weaker. That two-way relevance is the signature of a correct Evaluate answer.

In other words, Evaluate questions are Strengthen and Weaken questions wearing a trench coat. They test the exact same skill — identifying the logical gap in an argument — just phrased as "what information would help us assess this?" rather than "what strengthens/weakens this?" Once you see that, the whole question type collapses into something familiar.

How to Recognize Them

Evaluate stems are distinctive once you know the language. Watch for:

  • "The answer to which of the following questions would be most useful in evaluating the argument?"
  • "Which of the following would it be most helpful to know in assessing the columnist's reasoning?"
  • "The information most relevant in determining whether the conclusion is well supported is..."
  • "Answering which of the following questions would contribute most to an evaluation of the argument?"

The tell is the phrase "evaluate," "assess," or "determine whether" combined with a request for what information or which question would be most useful. Note that the answer choices in an Evaluate question are frequently phrased as questions — that's a strong signal too, though not universal.

The Method

Here's the step-by-step attack. It's short because the question type rewards a disciplined, repeatable process.

  1. Identify the conclusion. As with every argument-based question, find what the author is trying to prove. Everything else is either support or noise.
  2. Find the gap (the assumption). Ask: what does the author take for granted to get from the evidence to the conclusion? The correct answer will almost always probe this gap.
  3. Predict the question you'd want answered. Before looking at the choices, ask yourself: "What one fact would tell me whether this argument works?" You're pre-loading the answer.
  4. Apply the Variance Test to each choice. For each answer, imagine the two possible responses to the question. Ask: does one response strengthen the argument while the other weakens it? If yes — you've found it. If the answer to the question is irrelevant to the conclusion no matter how it comes out, eliminate it.

The Variance Test is your workhorse. Take the answer choice, treat it as a yes/no or high/low question, and plug in both extremes:

  • If "yes" strengthens and "no" weakens (or vice versa) → correct. The information matters.
  • If "yes" and "no" both leave the argument exactly where it was → wrong. The information is irrelevant.

The Common Traps

Evaluate wrong answers cluster into a few predictable patterns. Learn them and you'll eliminate three choices instantly.

Trap 1: The Irrelevant Detail. The choice asks about something mentioned in the stimulus but that has no bearing on the conclusion. Both possible answers leave the argument untouched. This is the most common wrong-answer type — it feels on-topic because it uses words from the passage, but it fails the Variance Test.

Trap 2: The One-Directional Answer. The choice's answer would only ever strengthen the argument, or only ever weaken it, no matter how it resolves. This can be tempting, but a true Evaluate answer must swing both ways. If you can't construct a version of the answer that weakens the argument, keep looking.

Trap 3: The Wrong-Scope Question. The choice probes a detail that's adjacent to the argument but doesn't touch the actual gap between evidence and conclusion. For example, if the argument concludes something about long-term effects, a question about immediate effects may be the wrong scope.

Trap 4: The Already-Answered Question. Occasionally a choice asks something the stimulus has already told you. If you already know the answer, resolving it can't change your evaluation — the information adds nothing new.

Worked Example

All practice questions in this guide are original, written in the style of the LSAT by Lovare instructors. They are not real LSAC questions.

Stimulus: A city installed new LED streetlights in its downtown district last year, replacing the older sodium lamps. In the year since installation, reported nighttime crimes in the downtown district fell by 22 percent. City officials concluded that the brighter LED lighting deterred criminal activity.

Question: The answer to which of the following questions would be most useful in evaluating the officials' conclusion?

Choices:

(A) How much did the LED streetlights cost to install compared to the older sodium lamps?
(B) Did the number of reported nighttime crimes in comparable districts without new lighting also change during the same year?
(C) How many hours per night were the LED streetlights illuminated?
(D) Were residents of the downtown district satisfied with the appearance of the new lighting?
(E) Do LED lights consume less electricity than sodium lamps?

Analysis: The conclusion is that the brighter lighting caused the crime drop. The gap: maybe crime fell for some other reason unrelated to the lights — a citywide trend, better policing, an economic shift. To evaluate this causal argument, I want to know whether the crime drop is unique to the district that got new lights.

Run the Variance Test on (B): If crime also fell 22 percent in comparable districts without new lighting, the argument collapses — the lights weren't special. If crime stayed flat in those districts while it dropped downtown, the argument gets much stronger. Both directions matter. (B) is correct.

(A), (C), (D), and (E) all fail the test. The cost, the appearance, and the electricity use of the lights are irrelevant to whether they caused the crime drop — no answer to those questions changes the causal claim. (C) is the trickiest distractor: hours of illumination sounds relevant, but the argument is about the lights' brightness deterring crime, and knowing the hours doesn't help distinguish the lights' effect from other causes.

Question 1: A nutritionist argues that a new plant-based protein bar is healthier than the leading dairy-based bar because the plant-based bar contains fewer grams of saturated fat per serving. Which question would be most useful to answer in evaluating this argument?

Question 2: A manager claims that offering employees flexible hours will increase overall productivity, citing a competing firm that adopted flexible hours and saw output rise 15 percent. What would be most helpful to know in assessing the manager's reasoning?

Question 3: A researcher concludes that a region's decline in bee populations is caused by a widely used pesticide, noting that bee numbers dropped sharply the same year the pesticide was introduced. Which question would be most useful in evaluating the researcher's conclusion?

How to Drill This Type

Because Evaluate questions are rare, you won't find a huge stockpile of them. Here's how to build the skill efficiently:

  • Piggyback on Strengthen and Weaken drills. Since Evaluate tests the same gap-finding skill, every Strengthen/Weaken set you complete makes you sharper at Evaluate. When you do a Strengthen question, pause and ask, "What single question would tell me whether this argument works?" — that's Evaluate reps in disguise.
  • Practice the Variance Test out loud. Force yourself to articulate both extremes of each answer choice. "If yes... if no..." This habit makes the correct answer jump out.
  • Use official questions from LawHub. For real, scored-quality practice, use LSAC's official PrepTests through LawHub, the only authoritative source of genuine LSAT material. Search out the Evaluate questions specifically and study why the credited answer swings both ways.
  • Don't over-invest. With so few Evaluate questions per test, mastering the method to a solid 90 percent is enough. Spend your marginal study hour on higher-frequency types like Flaw, Assumption, and Strengthen.

Remember the current LSAT format: two scored Logical Reasoning sections and one scored Reading Comprehension section (plus one unscored section), scored 120–180.
