Small and intense. New Haven is not the draw; the people are. Lots of dinner-party intellectualism, activism, and student-run everything.

New Haven is small and the winters are grey. Bar-required employment is the lowest in the T14 by design, but it unsettles some students.

New Haven: a small post-industrial city with excellent pizza, real problems, and a university that dominates it. Baker Hall graduate housing or East Rock and Wooster Square apartments. Nearly everyone walks.
New England grey. Long, damp winters and a compensating autumn. A free Saturday looks like this: East Rock hike, Frank Pepe or Sally's, a Metro-North train to New York in 100 minutes, someone's apartment.
Distance to market: 80 miles to New York, 140 to Boston. Both reachable by train. Airport: Tweed New Haven is small; most fly Hartford, JFK, or LaGuardia.

Clinics: More clinical seats per student than any US law school; students can do clinics from the first semester. Supreme Court Advocacy, Veterans Legal Services, Immigrant Rights (which has repeatedly litigated national-scale cases), Media Freedom and Information Access.

Since July 1, 2026 federal borrowing for professional students is capped at $50,000 a year and $200,000 in aggregate with Grad PLUS eliminated, under the Reimagining and Improving Student Education final rule, which attributes the change to the Working Families Tax Cuts Act (https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/05/01/2026-08556/reimagining-and-improving-student-education-federal-student-loan-program-final-regulations). That leaves a gap of about $59,040 a year at sticker, our arithmetic, to be closed by scholarship, savings or private credit.
