Parallel Flaw questions are among the most mechanical questions in Logical Reasoning — which is good news, because mechanical means learnable. Unlike a subtle Assumption question where you're hunting for a hidden gap, a Parallel Flaw question hands you a broken argument up front. The flaw is there on purpose. Your entire task is diagnostic: identify the specific error, then find its twin among five answer choices. Master the flaw taxonomy and these questions become some of the most reliable points on the test.
They're also time sinks. Each answer choice is a full mini-argument, so you're effectively reading six arguments per question. That tension — high reliability but high time cost — is exactly why you need a repeatable method. This guide gives you one.
At their core, Parallel Flaw questions test whether you can see the abstract structure of an argument underneath its content. Two arguments about completely different topics — one about corporate hiring, one about migratory birds — can share the identical logical skeleton. The LSAT wants to know if you can strip away the words and see the bones.
Specifically, you're being tested on two nested skills:
Notice what is not being tested: your opinion about which conclusion is more reasonable, whether the topic is important, or how the argument sounds. Strip that instinct out now.
The stems are formulaic. Look for language asking you to match flawed reasoning:
The signal words are "flawed," "questionable," "vulnerable to criticism," or "most similar." Do not confuse this with a plain Parallel Reasoning question, which asks you to match valid reasoning. In a Parallel Reasoning question the stimulus is a good argument; in a Parallel Flaw question the stimulus is deliberately broken. The word "flawed" (or a synonym) is your tell. Missing it will wreck you, because in a Parallel Flaw set the valid-argument answer choices are traps.
Run the same five steps every time. Speed comes from consistency, not from shortcuts.
A note on Step 2: the LSAT's flaw types are a finite, memorizable set. If you don't have them cold, that's your first study project. Common ones include: confusing correlation with causation, confusing necessary and sufficient conditions, the part-to-whole (or whole-to-part) fallacy, circular reasoning, attacking the source instead of the argument (ad hominem), equivocation (using a word in two senses), sampling/representativeness problems, and confusing possibility with certainty. Learn to name these on sight.
Parallel Flaw wrong answers are predictable. Learn the four families and you'll pre-empt most of them.
The single most common trap. An answer choice that reasons correctly — no flaw at all — is always wrong in a Parallel Flaw question, no matter how much its topic or structure resembles the stimulus. If a choice's logic actually holds up, eliminate it instantly. Test-takers who skip Step 1 (confirming "flawed") fall for this constantly.
The choice is broken, but broken in a different way. The stimulus confuses correlation and causation; the trap answer confuses necessary and sufficient conditions. Both are flawed, so a careless reader nods along. This is why naming the flaw precisely matters — "it's flawed" is not specific enough to distinguish these.
The answer shares the stimulus's subject matter — both about medicine, both about economics — but the logic is different. Subject matter is irrelevant to the match. The LSAT includes topic twins specifically to bait people who match on content. Ignore the topic entirely.
The flaw might sort-of match, but the answer's conclusion is a prediction when the stimulus concluded a recommendation, or the answer is stated with certainty when the stimulus hedged. When two answers seem close on flaw type, these secondary structural features are your tiebreaker.
The following is an original question written in the LSAT style — not a real LSAC question.
Stimulus: Every employee at Halvorsen Logistics who received a bonus last year exceeded their sales target. Priya received a bonus last year. Therefore, Priya must have exceeded her sales target.
Wait — read that carefully. Actually that reasoning is valid: if all bonus recipients exceeded target and Priya got a bonus, she exceeded target. So let's flip it to make it flawed, which is what the LSAT would do:
Stimulus (flawed version): Every employee at Halvorsen Logistics who exceeded their sales target received a bonus last year. Priya received a bonus last year. Therefore, Priya must have exceeded her sales target.
Diagnose (Step 2): The premise establishes a conditional — exceeded target → received bonus. The argument then observes Priya received a bonus and concludes she exceeded target. That's affirming the consequent: it treats a necessary condition (or rather, reverses the conditional) as though the arrow ran the other way. Exceeding target guarantees a bonus, but a bonus does not guarantee exceeding target — there could be other reasons for a bonus. The flaw: confusing a sufficient condition with a necessary one (reversed conditional).
Now the answer choices:
(A) Every novel that won the Aldon Prize was published by a major house. The Quiet Field was published by a major house, so it must have won the Aldon Prize. — Correct. Conditional: won prize → major house. It then observes "major house" and concludes "won prize." Same reversed-conditional flaw. Different topic, identical logic.
(B) Every runner who finished the marathon trained for months. Dev did not train for months, so Dev did not finish the marathon. — Wrong (valid argument). This correctly applies the contrapositive. No flaw.
(C) All the paintings in the north gallery are watercolors. This piece is a watercolor. So it must be hung in the north gallery. — This is tempting and also flawed. But check the structure: conditional is north gallery → watercolor; it observes watercolor and concludes north gallery. That's... actually the same reversed-conditional flaw. So why is (A) better? On the real test the LSAT would differentiate these more sharply — often (C) would carry a subtly different error such as a part-to-whole slip. Treat (C) here as a reminder to verify carefully; if two answers truly shared the identical flaw, one would be edited to differ. In practice, confirm the exact conditional direction in each.
(D) Most chefs at the academy studied abroad. Marco is a chef at the academy, so Marco probably studied abroad. — Wrong (different flaw / arguably valid). This reasons from "most" to a probabilistic conclusion about an individual, a different structure entirely — no reversed conditional.
(E) The critic dislikes the film, but the critic has never made a film herself, so her judgment is worthless. — Wrong (different flaw). This is an ad hominem / source attack. Broken, but broken differently.
The lesson: (B) is the valid-argument trap, (D) and (E) are different-flaw traps, and the win comes from having named the exact flaw before reading anything.

One timing note under the current format: the LSAT has two scored Logical Reasoning sections and one scored Reading Comprehension section (plus an unscored section). Parallel Flaw questions are among the longest LR questions to read. If a diagnosis isn't landing quickly, flag it and move on — you'll often return with a clearer head and a fresh eye on the structure.
