Most Logical Reasoning questions ask you to reason from a premise to a conclusion. Paradox questions do something different — and that difference is exactly why students misread them. There is no conclusion to attack, no assumption bridging premise to claim. Instead you get two facts, both true, that seem impossible to hold at the same time. Your job is not to argue. It's to be the person who walks into the room and says, "Oh — that actually makes sense, here's why."
Because these questions run on facts rather than arguments, the usual instinct to look for a flaw or a gap will send you the wrong direction. Master the specific reflex Paradox questions demand and they become some of the fastest, most reliable points on the section.
The underlying skill is reconciliation under constraint: given two statements that appear to contradict each other, can you identify the missing information that lets both be true simultaneously?
Here is the shape of every Paradox stimulus. You are told Fact A. You are told Fact B. On the surface, if A is true you would expect B to be false — or vice versa. Yet the stimulus insists both are true. The surprise is real, and you are not allowed to explain it away by pretending one fact isn't true.
Example of the tension in plain terms: "The town installed brighter streetlights on Main Street. Yet the number of nighttime accidents on Main Street increased." You'd expect brighter lights to reduce accidents. Both facts stand. The right answer will hand you the missing piece — maybe the brighter lights attracted far more nighttime foot and car traffic, so accidents rose even as the per-trip risk fell.
Notice what the resolution did: it added a new variable (traffic volume) that reconciles the two facts without denying either. That move — adding, not subtracting — is the entire game.
Paradox questions announce themselves clearly in the question stem. Look for:
The tell is the combination of (a) a word signaling conflict — discrepancy, paradox, conflict, surprising, puzzling, apparent — and (b) the instruction to explain or resolve rather than to support or weaken. Also note the phrase "if true": as in Strengthen and Weaken questions, you accept every answer choice as fact and judge only whether it does the job.
In the stimulus itself, watch for a pivot word — yet, however, but, surprisingly, nevertheless, despite — sitting between two factual claims. That pivot is usually the seam of the paradox.
Run these five steps every time. With practice they collapse into a few seconds.
The wrong answers in Paradox questions cluster into a handful of predictable patterns. Learn them and your accuracy jumps.
1. The One-Sided Choice. This choice explains or reinforces only one of the two facts and ignores the other. In the streetlights problem, a choice that just elaborates on how bright the new lights are does nothing — it addresses Fact A but leaves the surprising Fact B untouched. A resolution has to bridge both facts.
2. The Deepener. This choice makes the paradox worse, not better. "The new lights also included motion sensors that flash to alert drivers." That makes the rise in accidents even more baffling. Test-writers love this trap because a rushed reader sees a relevant detail and grabs it. Always ask whether a choice eases the tension or intensifies it.
3. The Contradictor. This choice resolves the tension by essentially denying a fact — "Actually, nighttime accidents on Main Street did not increase." You are not permitted to overturn the stimulus. Both facts are given as true; a real resolution keeps both intact.
4. The Irrelevant Distractor. This choice is a true, plausible statement about the topic that simply doesn't touch the conflict. "Streetlight installation was funded by a state grant." Interesting, useless. It neither eases nor deepens the paradox.
5. The Out-of-Scope Shift. This choice explains a different phenomenon than the one in the stimulus — it changes the location, time frame, or population. If the stimulus is about Main Street at night, a choice about daytime accidents on a different street doesn't resolve anything.
The single most valuable habit: for every choice, ask the yes/no question, "Does this let both surprising facts be true at once?" Only one choice earns a clean "yes."
The following is an original question written in the style of the LSAT. It is not a real LSAC question.
A regional airline replaced its older jets with newer models that burn significantly less fuel per mile. Industry analysts predicted the airline's total annual fuel costs would fall as a result. However, in the year after the fleet upgrade, the airline's total annual fuel costs rose.
Which one of the following, if true, most helps to resolve the apparent discrepancy?
(A) The newer jets required more frequent routine maintenance than the older jets they replaced.
(B) After acquiring the more efficient jets, the airline added many new routes and greatly increased the total number of miles flown per year.
(C) The price of jet fuel remained roughly constant throughout the year in question.
(D) The newer jets were more comfortable, which increased passenger demand for the airline's flights.
(E) Several competing airlines also upgraded to more fuel-efficient jets during the same year.
Step 1 — the two facts: (A) The new jets burn less fuel per mile. (B) Total annual fuel costs rose. Pivot word: however.
Step 2 — the surprise: More efficient jets should mean LOWER fuel costs, yet costs went up. Why?
Step 3 — predicted shape: Something that increased total fuel use enough to outweigh the per-mile savings. The obvious lever is total miles flown.
Step 4 — test the choices:
Step 5 — confirm: (B) denies neither fact. The jets really are more efficient per mile, AND total costs really rose, precisely because total mileage climbed. Both stand. Answer: (B).
