Law and economics. The intellectual movement that reshaped American antitrust, contract, and regulatory law started in this building. Number one nationally in law and economics; top-five in constitutional law, antitrust, and legal writing.
Law and economics is the house style, though the faculty is more ideologically varied than the reputation suggests. Everything gets interrogated from first principles.

Real and enforced. Chicago is more rigorous than competitive: the pressure comes from the material and from your classmates' seriousness, not from sabotage.
Grading: Numerical 155-186 scale with a mandatory mean. No letters. 180 is a rare, memorable grade. Class rank: No published rank; honors cutoffs are known and internalized.
The disclosed backdrop: UChicago admitted 9.7 percent of applicants and employs 98.1 percent of graduates at ten months, so the competition is over which job rather than whether one exists. Small 1L sections plus the signature Elements of the Law course, taught only at Chicago, that frames the entire first year around jurisprudential method.

The complaint students actually make: Intense. Cold. Hyde Park is a long way from the rest of Chicago and the winters are punishing. The workload is the heaviest in the T14.

Chicago is the best value big city in America; Hyde Park is a village inside it. Most students live in Hyde Park apartments within walking distance; a minority commute from the South Loop.
Brutal. Lake-effect wind, a January that tests people, and a genuinely glorious June through September. A free Saturday looks like this: The Point on the lake, the Museum of Science and Industry, a train downtown for the Art Institute, Promontory or the Green Mill for jazz.
Distance to market: 7 miles to the Loop, where every Chicago firm sits. Airport: Midway 30 minutes, O'Hare 50.

Cost of attendance is $122,034 a year and the median grant is $15,000 to 78 percent of students, so the median student pays roughly $107,034 a year before interest.
Since July 1, 2026 federal borrowing for professional students is capped at $50,000 a year and $200,000 in aggregate with Grad PLUS eliminated, under the Reimagining and Improving Student Education final rule, which attributes the change to the Working Families Tax Cuts Act (https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/05/01/2026-08556/reimagining-and-improving-student-education-federal-student-loan-program-final-regulations). That leaves a gap of about $72,034 a year at sticker, our arithmetic, to be closed by scholarship, savings or private credit.
