Insular by geography. Everyone lives within a few blocks, the bar scene is Collegetown, and social life happens inside the school because there is nowhere else for it to happen.

The complaint students actually make: Ithaca. It is beautiful, and it is four hours from New York City, and the winters are long and dark. Some students find the isolation clarifying and others find it claustrophobic.

Ithaca: a small, beautiful, deeply isolated college town of 30,000 in the Finger Lakes. Collegetown apartments and Fall Creek houses, nearly all within walking distance of the law school.
Genuinely severe. Long, grey, snowy winters from November to April, and a spectacular six weeks of autumn. A free Saturday looks like this: Gorges and waterfalls, the farmers market on the lake, Finger Lakes wineries, and a lot of time indoors from December onward.
Distance to market: Four hours to New York City by car, and there is no fast train. Cornell flies students to interviews and it matters. Airport: ITH is small and expensive with limited routes; most connect through Philadelphia or Detroit.

Since July 1, 2026 federal borrowing for professional students is capped at $50,000 a year and $200,000 in aggregate with Grad PLUS eliminated, under the Reimagining and Improving Student Education final rule, which attributes the change to the Working Families Tax Cuts Act (https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/05/01/2026-08556/reimagining-and-improving-student-education-federal-student-loan-program-final-regulations). Who should look elsewhere: Anyone who needs a city, a large course catalogue, or a strong clerkship or academic pipeline.
The trade-off, stated plainly: You accept three years of real isolation in exchange for the highest law firm placement rate in the country.
