Not if it is phased. Six flat months of the same activity is too long and produces burnout with no corresponding gain. Six months in four distinct phases, with the intensity in the middle, is close to ideal for a large target move.
The evidence on duration is worth reading carefully here. Program duration in weeks did not predict outcomes at p = .314, and neither did contact hours at p = .489, across 28 studies and more than 16,000 participants, per Hao and colleagues (2025), Review of Educational Research (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.3102/00346543251360775).
The conclusion is not that six months is useless. It is that six months of the wrong activity is worth no more than one month of it, so the phase design is the entire value of the timeline.

Because speed built on shaky accuracy is a way of making errors faster. Almost everyone wants to time everything from week one, and almost everyone who does it plateaus around week ten.
The rule for leaving the untimed phase is accuracy rather than the calendar: when you are consistently above your target accuracy with no clock, the clock becomes the next problem. Before that, the clock is a distraction from the actual problem.
Eight weeks is a long untimed phase and it is the single most common thing successful plans have that unsuccessful ones do not.
A long timeline is only an advantage if it is spaced, and spacing is where the measured gains are. Spaced practice produced 47.3 percent correct against 36.7 percent massed, and 259 of 271 comparisons favored spacing, per Cepeda and colleagues (2006), Psychological Bulletin (https://www.yorku.ca/ncepeda/publications/CPVWR2006.pdf).
Interleaving matters just as much once you know the types. Space the drilling; do not try to space a full timed exam into pieces.
Build one full rest day a week and one lighter week in every four, from the start rather than when you need it. Plans without scheduled deloads do not get followed for six months; they get abandoned in month four.
Expect the curve to be lumpy rather than smooth. So a flat fortnight is not evidence your plan has failed. It does not buy a guarantee, and it does not buy a proportional return on hours. Read that as encouragement rather than the reverse. It means the marginal hour is worth less than the marginal improvement in method, which is exactly the lever a six-month plan can pull and a one-month plan cannot.
The people who gain most over six months are not the ones who studied most. They are the ones who changed how they reviewed in month two and then had four months to compound it.
