The 3 Month LSAT Study Schedule That Actually Works

Yes, a 3 month LSAT study schedule is enough for most people. Thirteen weeks at 15 to 20 hours a week is 195 to 260 hours, which clears what a full rebuild of Logical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension takes. What decides your outcome is not the hour count but how those hours split between doing and reviewing.

Is 3 months enough to study for the LSAT?

For a gain of roughly five to twelve points from a real diagnostic baseline, yes. For a twenty-point rebuild from a low starting point, three months is tight and six is the honest recommendation.

Those bands are planning heuristics from our coaching practice, not published research, and we label them as such. The published evidence is actually a caution against the last row.

The most recent meta-analysis of test preparation found that neither contact hours (p = .489) nor program duration in weeks (p = .314) significantly predicted score outcomes across 28 studies and over 16,000 participants (Hao, Baird, El Masri and Double, 2025, Review of Educational Research, https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.3102/00346543251360775). More hours, by themselves, do not buy more points.

What the evidence says about how the hours should be spent

Three findings should shape every week of this plan, and together they explain why most self-study fails.

First, testing yourself beats reviewing material, with a pooled effect of g = 0.50 across 61 studies (Rowland, 2014, Psychological Bulletin, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25150680/). Second, and more important, feedback roughly doubles that benefit: g = 0.73 with feedback versus g = 0.39 without.

Third, the benefit grows with delay, at g = 0.69 for retention intervals of a day or more versus g = 0.41 under a day. In plain terms: drilling without careful review captures about half the available gain, and cramming captures less than spacing.

The spacing evidence points the same direction. Across 184 articles and 317 experiments, spaced practice produced 47.3 percent correct against 36.7 percent for massed practice, with 259 of 271 comparisons favoring spacing (Cepeda, Pashler, Vul, Wixted and Rohrer, 2006, Psychological Bulletin, https://www.yorku.ca/ncepeda/publications/CPVWR2006.pdf).

One honest caveat: spacing effects shrink as task complexity rises, and in one meta-analysis the effect nearly vanished on high-complexity tasks (Donovan and Radosevich, 1999, Journal of Applied Psychology, https://gwern.net/doc/psychology/spaced-repetition/1999-donovan.pdf). LSAT reasoning is complex, so treat spacing as well-supported rather than guaranteed.

How many hours a day should I study for the LSAT?

Two to three on weekdays and four to six on one weekend day is the shape that works for most people on a 15 to 20 hour week. The distribution matters more than the total.

Five to six study days beats seven. The rest day is not indulgence, it is what makes the spacing work, and the research on chronic sleep restriction is unambiguous that stacking days without recovery degrades exactly the attention the test taxes.

One structural rule: never let a drill sit un-reviewed overnight if you can help it, but never review immediately either. The gap between doing and reviewing is where the learning happens.

The three phases

The phase boundaries are soft, and the transition rule is a performance rule rather than a calendar rule. Do not move to phase two until you can explain, for every question type, what the question is asking and what makes a wrong answer wrong.

Phase 1, weeks 1 to 4: foundations

Take a full timed diagnostic in week one before you learn anything. You need a real baseline to measure against, and a diagnostic taken after two weeks of study measures nothing.

Then work type by type, untimed, through Logical Reasoning: assumption family, strengthen and weaken, flaw, inference, method and parallel, principle, paradox. Logical Reasoning is now two of your three scored sections, so it should absorb roughly two thirds of your learning time.

The scored LSAT is two Logical Reasoning sections plus one Reading Comprehension section, each 35 minutes, with one unscored variable section and a 10-minute intermission after section two (https://www.lsac.org/lsat/register-lsat/accommodations/specifications-lsat-and-lsat-argumentative-writing). Any plan that allocates time as though there are three different section types is out of date.

Start the error log in week one and never stop. One row per missed question: the question type, what you picked, what was right, and the specific reason you went wrong, written as a sentence rather than a label.

Phase 2, weeks 5 to 9: drilling and blind review

This is where scores actually move, and it is the phase most people rush. Drill in sets of ten to fifteen questions by type, untimed at first, then with a soft time target once accuracy exceeds 80 percent within a type.

Interleave types rather than blocking them once you have the fundamentals. The best classroom evidence for this is a cluster randomized trial of 787 seventh-grade students where interleaved practice produced 61 percent correct against 38 percent for blocked practice at a roughly 33-day delay, d = 0.83 (Rohrer, Dedrick, Hartwig and Cheung, 2019, Journal of Educational Psychology, https://gwern.net/doc/psychology/spaced-repetition/2019-rohrer.pdf).

Blocked practice feels better and produces less. That gap between feeling and result is the single most reliable pattern in the learning literature and the reason this plan will sometimes feel worse than a plan that works less well.

The blind review protocol

This is the core method of the entire plan. Run it on every timed section and every drill set, without exception.

Step one, complete the set under time and mark every question you were not certain about, including ones you got right. Step two, before looking at any answer, redo every marked question with unlimited time and write down your reasoning.

Step three, score both passes separately: your timed score and your blind review score. Step four, sort your misses into two piles.

The two piles are the whole diagnostic. Questions you got right in blind review are timing and execution problems; questions you got wrong in blind review are knowledge problems. They require completely different fixes, and treating them as one problem is why people plateau.

Step five, for every blind review miss, write one sentence in the error log explaining why the correct answer is correct and why your answer is wrong. Not a category label, a sentence. This step is the feedback that the research says doubles the effect of practice.

When should I start timed sections?

Introduce single timed sections in week five and full timed tests in week ten. Both are earlier than instinct suggests and later than most self-study plans do it.

The reason for the delay is that timed practice before your accuracy is stable trains you to make fast versions of your existing mistakes. Speed built on shaky fundamentals is exactly what collapses on test day.

The reason not to delay past week ten is stamina and pacing, which are separate skills from accuracy and take repetitions of their own. Four full tests in the last four weeks is enough; eight is too many and eats the review time that makes them useful.

Remember the meta-analytic finding here: practice tests alone were the weakest and statistically nonsignificant prep intervention at g = .19, p = .233 (Hao et al., 2025). A practice test is a measurement instrument and a stamina rehearsal, not a teaching tool.

Phase 3, weeks 10 to 13: timed work and the taper

One full test per week, taken at the time of day your real administration is scheduled, followed by a full blind review that takes longer than the test did. If your review is faster than your test, you are not reviewing.

Weeks ten through twelve are the full-test weeks. Week thirteen is the taper: no full tests, light drilling of your strongest types only, error log review, and logistics.

The taper is not laziness. Chronic sleep restriction research found that after 14 days at six hours a night, attention lapses reached the equivalent of a full night of total sleep deprivation, while subjects rated themselves only slightly sleepy (Van Dongen, Maislin, Mullington and Dinges, 2003, Sleep, https://academic.oup.com/sleep/article-abstract/26/2/117/2709164).

That last detail is the one to internalize: your self-assessment of how tired you are does not track your actual impairment. A taper protects the score you already built.

Forking the plan to your situation

The plan above assumes a moderately flexible schedule and a mid-range starting score. Four common situations need a different shape, and the Lovare archetype quiz exists to sort people into the right one.

The last row is counterintuitive and it is the one we most often prescribe. If your score has not moved in six weeks, more tests are generating data you are not using.

What a template week actually looks like

Concreteness matters more than theory here, so here is one week from phase two, written out.

Monday: 15 assumption-family questions untimed, then 45 minutes of blind review and error log entry. Tuesday: 15 flaw and method questions interleaved, same review protocol.

Wednesday: two Reading Comprehension passages untimed with full structural annotation, then review. Thursday: 20 mixed Logical Reasoning questions with a soft 35-minute target, full blind review.

Friday: 45 minutes reading the error log from the last three weeks and re-attempting five old misses cold. Saturday: two timed sections back to back, then two hours of blind review. Sunday: finish review, tally the error log by type, and choose next week's focus from whichever type has the most entries.

The materials you actually need

Picking your test date

Count backward thirteen weeks from a real administration and check that the whole window is protected. LSAT dates for the 2026-27 testing year are August 5 to 8, September 9 to 12, October 7 to 10, and November 11 to 14 in 2026, then January 13 to 16, February 12 to 13, April 8 to 10, and June 9 to 12 in 2027 (https://www.lsac.org/LSATdates).

Build a retake into the plan from the start rather than treating it as failure. Almost half of test takers, 49.1 percent in 2024-25, test more than once, and the average second-attempt gain was 2.39 points (LSAC TR 26-01, https://www.lsac.org/sites/default/files/research/TR-26-01.pdf).

Choosing a date that leaves one more administration before your application deadline is the single cheapest risk reduction available. It costs nothing and it removes the pressure that makes a bad test day worse.

Weeks five through nine are where the score is built and where most people substitute volume for depth. If you finish week nine with a thin error log, the last four weeks cannot rescue the plan.

How to run a drill set properly

Pick one or two question types and pull ten to fifteen questions. Do them without a timer in phase one and with a soft target in phase two, marking every question you are less than certain about as you go.

The marking is not optional and it is not the same as flagging hard questions. You are recording your confidence, which becomes the diagnostic signal when you compare it against your accuracy.

A set where you were certain on twelve and got ten right is a different problem from a set where you were uncertain on twelve and got ten right. The first is a knowledge gap you cannot see; the second is a speed problem waiting to happen.

Reading Comprehension needs its own method

RC is one of your three scored sections and it responds to a different kind of practice than Logical Reasoning. Most people drill it as though it were a reading speed problem, which it is not.

Read for architecture: what is the author's position, where does it appear, which paragraphs carry support, and where does the passage turn. A passage you can summarize in three sentences is a passage whose questions you can mostly predict.

The drill that works is untimed structural annotation. Take one passage, mark the thesis, the shifts, and the author's attitude, write a three-sentence summary from memory, and only then answer the questions.

Do that twice a week through phases one and two. Speed comes from knowing where to look, and knowing where to look comes from having practiced building the map.

The error log, in detail

Your error log is the single most valuable artifact you will produce in three months, and most people keep one for nine days.

Five columns: date, question type, what you chose, what was correct, and one full sentence explaining why the correct answer is correct and yours is not. The sentence is the entire point, because writing it is the feedback step that roughly doubles the value of the practice.

Every Sunday, tally the log by question type and let the tally choose next week's focus. This is the mechanism that keeps the plan responsive instead of a schedule you follow while your actual weaknesses go untouched.

Every third week, re-attempt five old misses cold, without reading your own notes. Questions you miss twice are the real curriculum, and questions you now find easy are proof the method is working.

What to cut when you fall behind

You will fall behind, and how you recover determines the outcome more than whether you fell behind at all. Cut in this order.

Cut full tests first. They are the most time-expensive item on the plan and the meta-analytic evidence supports them least, at a nonsignificant g = .19 for practice tests alone.

Cut new content second. If you have covered every question type once, more lessons are lower value than more review of what you have already done wrong.

Never cut blind review. If a week collapses to four hours, spend all four reviewing questions you have already done rather than doing new ones, because reviewing forty old questions beats doing forty new ones and reviewing none.

Test day and the two weeks before it

Two weeks out, stop adding anything new. The score you have on test day is the score you built by week eleven, and weeks twelve and thirteen protect it rather than raise it.

Practice at your administration's time of day, in a setting that resembles a test center rather than your bed. Beginning with the August 2026 administration almost all test takers sit the exam in person at Prometric centers, so home-desk rehearsal is now a weaker simulation than it used to be.

Sleep is the variable most worth protecting in the final two weeks, and the reason is specific. Chronic restriction to six hours a night for two weeks produced attention lapses equivalent to a full night of total sleep deprivation while subjects reported feeling only slightly sleepy, so your own sense of readiness is not a reliable instrument here.

The night before, do nothing academic. Pack your identification, confirm the center address and your arrival time, and go to bed at your normal hour rather than early, since lying awake early is worse than sleeping normally.

Building the retake into the plan

Decide now which administration is your backup, and choose a primary date that leaves at least one more before your application deadlines. This single decision removes most of the pressure that makes a bad day worse.

The base rates support planning this way rather than treating a retake as failure. In 2024-25, 49.1 percent of test takers tested more than once, with 29.7 percent on a second attempt, and the mean second-attempt gain was 2.39 points.

Third attempts still gained, at a mean of 2.03 points in 2024-25, so the returns diminish without collapsing. What LSAC does not publish in its current report is the percentage of repeaters who improve, decline, or stay flat, so treat any specific percent-improve figure you see quoted as unsourced.

Common ways this plan gets run wrong

Taking a full test every weekend from week one. This is the most common self-study pattern and it generates twelve tests worth of data with no time to learn from any of it.

Reviewing only the questions you got wrong. Questions you got right while uncertain are the ones that will flip on test day, which is why the confidence marking exists.

Studying seven days a week until burnout arrives in week eight. Five or six days sustained for thirteen weeks beats seven days sustained for seven.

Chasing new material when the score stalls. A stall in week eight almost always means the error log is thin, and the fix is depth on questions you have already seen rather than a new course, a new book, or a new method.

The six-week version, if that is all you have

Sometimes the calendar decides for you. A six-week plan is a compression of this one, not a different plan, and the compression has to come out of specific places.

Keep the diagnostic, keep the error log, and keep blind review at full depth. Cut phase one from four weeks to two by learning question types in the order your diagnostic says you are weakest, rather than working through all of them systematically.

Run two full tests rather than four, in weeks five and six. Expect a smaller gain, in the three to six point range rather than five to twelve, and plan a retake from the start rather than treating the compressed cycle as your only attempt.

What you must not do is compress by cutting review. A six-week plan that drills twice as hard with half the review is a six-week plan that produces a diagnostic score with more hours attached.

The six-month version, if you have the runway

More time is genuinely better here, and the reason is spacing rather than volume. Across 184 articles and 317 experiments, spaced practice produced 47.3 percent correct against 36.7 percent massed, and optimal gaps scale with how long you need to retain the material.

The six-month shape is the same three phases with phase two roughly doubled, since drilling and review is where the score is built and it responds to more time better than any other phase. Add a mid-plan break of one full week at the three-month mark.

Do not add full tests to fill the extra time. The dose-response finding holds: neither contact hours nor program duration predicted score outcomes in the most recent test-prep meta-analysis, so extra months should buy depth per question rather than more questions.

Question types, and how much each is worth

Allocate study time by frequency, not by difficulty or by how much you dislike a type.

Logical Reasoning is two of three scored sections, so roughly two thirds of your questions come from a single skill family. Within it, the assumption family, strengthen and weaken, flaw, and inference questions dominate by volume, which means they should dominate your weeks.

Reading Comprehension is one section and a genuinely different skill, and it is the section most students under-practice because progress on it feels slow. Two dedicated RC sessions a week from week one is the minimum that produces movement.

The unscored variable section matters only in one respect: you will not know which section it is, so you cannot save energy for the ones that count. Practice at full effort for all four sections, because on test day you have to.

What progress actually looks like

People abandon working plans because they expect the wrong shape of improvement. Score movement in a well-run plan is lumpy, not linear.

The research on individual learning curves supports this directly. Across 40 datasets and 7,910 individual learning series, exponential fits beat power fits in 82.2 percent of cases, and averaging across people manufactures smooth curves that no individual actually follows.

Expect a flat first three weeks while you learn types, a jump somewhere in weeks five to seven, a plateau in weeks eight and nine that is usually noise, and a second movement in the timed phase as pacing consolidates. A flat stretch inside that pattern is not evidence the plan is failing.

Track a rolling average across four tests rather than reacting to single scores. Single practice test scores carry enough measurement error that a three-point swing tells you nothing at all.

Frequently made objections, answered

"I do not have time to review as long as I practice." Then practice less. Twenty questions with full review beats forty with none, and the research on this is about as settled as education research gets.

"My score goes up when I take more tests." It may, and the meta-analytic evidence says practice tests alone did not reliably raise scores across 28 studies. What tests do well is rehearse stamina and measure progress, and those are worth four to six sessions rather than twenty.

"Blind review takes forever." It does at first, roughly two hours for a full test, and it compresses substantially by week eight as your error patterns narrow. The time it takes early is the time you are actually learning.

"I already know why I got them wrong." Then writing the sentence takes fifteen seconds, and if it takes longer than that you did not know. This is the cheapest self-test in the entire plan.

Where to start today

Take a full timed test under real conditions this week, before you read another word of strategy. Without a baseline you cannot choose a target, size the gap, or tell in six weeks whether anything is working.

Then pick your test date from the published 2026-27 calendar, count back thirteen weeks, and check that the window is protected. If it is not, pick the next administration rather than compressing the plan into a schedule you will abandon in week four.

Finally, set up the error log before your first drill set. It is a spreadsheet with five columns, it takes four minutes to build, and it is the single artifact that separates a plan that works from a plan that generates hours.
