What Is On The Lsat

The LSAT has four multiple-choice sections: two scored Logical Reasoning sections, one scored Reading Comprehension section, and one unscored variable section, since Logic Games was retired in August 2024. Every LSAT is scored 120 to 180, and a separate LSAT Writing sample is completed online. This hub explains the LSAT sections, question types, timing, and scoring.

What is on the LSAT?

The LSAT is made up of four 35-minute multiple-choice sections: two scored Logical Reasoning sections, one scored Reading Comprehension section, and one unscored variable section used to pretest future questions. Since August 2024, the LSAT no longer includes the Analytical Reasoning section known as Logic Games. Every test taker also completes LSAT Writing, an unscored writing sample submitted separately online.

How many sections and questions are on the LSAT?

The scored portion of the LSAT is three sections, two Logical Reasoning and one Reading Comprehension, and the unscored variable section adds a fourth. The exact number of questions shifts slightly between administrations, so the counts below are drawn from LSAC current published format.

For the current exam structure and policies, use LSAC’s official LSAT FAQs and LSAT specifications.

How does the LSAT work and how is it scored?

Every LSAT is reported on a scale of 120 to 180, with your score based only on the scored Logical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension questions. The unscored variable section is not identified during the test, so you should treat every section as if it counts. LSAC also converts your raw score to a percentile that shows how you rank against other recent test takers, and that percentile figure shifts year to year; see the linked U.S. News ranking for the current No. 1.

What LSAT format topics can I explore in more depth?

This hub connects to focused pages on the individual pieces of the LSAT. You can read what the sections of the LSAT are, how many questions the LSAT has, and the specific Logical Reasoning question types such as assumption, flaw, strengthen, weaken, and must-be-true. Related pages explain what LSAT jargon like takes for granted means and what the 120 to 180 score scale represents.

How do I use the LSAT format to plan my prep?

Because two of the three scored LSAT sections are Logical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning carries the most weight and is usually the highest-leverage place to focus early. Build your study plan around timed 35-minute sections so pacing feels automatic on test day. Diagnose which question types cost you the most points, then drill those types until your accuracy under time improves.

What is on the LSAT?

The LSAT is four 35-minute multiple-choice sections: two scored Logical Reasoning sections, one scored Reading Comprehension section, and one unscored variable section that pretests future questions. Logic Games was retired in August 2024. Test takers also complete LSAT Writing, an unscored essay submitted online separately from the multiple-choice test.

How many sections does the LSAT have?

The LSAT has four multiple-choice sections: two scored Logical Reasoning sections, one scored Reading Comprehension section, and one unscored variable section. Only three sections count toward your 120 to 180 score. LSAT Writing is completed separately online and is not one of the four test-day sections.

How long is the LSAT?

Each LSAT section runs 35 minutes, so the four sections total about two hours and twenty minutes of testing, plus one scheduled break. Actual seat time is longer once check-in and instructions are included. LSAT Writing is completed separately and adds its own time outside the multiple-choice test day. about a 3-hour test delivered at Prometric test centers and by remote proctoring, with scores released roughly three weeks later
