What are the Sections of the LSAT

The LSAT has four multiple-choice sections: two scored Logical Reasoning sections, one scored Reading Comprehension section, and one unscored variable section that pretests future questions. Logic Games was retired in August 2024. Separately, every test taker completes LSAT Writing, an unscored argumentative essay submitted online outside the multiple-choice test day.

What are the sections of the LSAT?

The LSAT is built from four 35-minute multiple-choice sections: two scored Logical Reasoning sections, one scored Reading Comprehension section, and one unscored variable section. Only the three scored sections count toward your 120 to 180 score. Since August 2024, the LSAT no longer includes Analytical Reasoning, the section commonly known as Logic Games.

What does each LSAT section test?

Logical Reasoning presents short arguments and asks you to analyze, strengthen, weaken, or draw conclusions from them, and it appears twice. Reading Comprehension gives long, dense passages followed by questions about their structure and meaning. The variable section looks like a normal Logical Reasoning or Reading Comprehension section but is unscored, because LSAC uses it to test future questions.

  • Logical Reasoning, two scored sections, argument analysis
  • Reading Comprehension, one scored section, dense passages
  • Variable section, unscored, pretests new questions
  • LSAT Writing, unscored essay completed separately online

Why do the LSAT sections matter for law school?

Because two of the three scored sections are Logical Reasoning, the LSAT weights argument analysis heavily, the same skill law schools expect you to use daily. Reading Comprehension mirrors the dense reading of case law and statutes. Understanding this weighting helps you allocate prep time toward the skills that both the test and law school reward most.

What do people get wrong about the LSAT sections?

A frequent misconception is that Logic Games is still on the LSAT; it was removed in August 2024. Another is that LSAT Writing is one of the test-day multiple-choice sections, when it is actually a separate, unscored essay. Test takers also assume they can identify the unscored variable section, but it is not labeled, so every section should be treated as scored.

Frequently asked questions

How many sections are on the LSAT?

The LSAT has four multiple-choice sections: two scored Logical Reasoning sections, one scored Reading Comprehension section, and one unscored variable section. Three of the four count toward your 120 to 180 score. LSAT Writing is a separate, unscored essay and is not one of the four test-day sections.

Is Logic Games still on the LSAT?

No. LSAC retired the Analytical Reasoning section, widely known as Logic Games, in August 2024. The current LSAT replaced it with a second scored Logical Reasoning section. If you are studying from older materials that still include Logic Games, that content no longer reflects the test you will take.

Which LSAT sections are scored?

Three LSAT sections are scored: two Logical Reasoning sections and one Reading Comprehension section. The fourth section, the variable or experimental section, is unscored and is used by LSAC to pretest future questions. Because the variable section is not identified during the test, treat every section as if it counts toward your score.

Is LSAT Writing a section of the LSAT?

LSAT Writing is required but is not one of the four multiple-choice test-day sections, and it does not affect your 120 to 180 score. It is an unscored argumentative essay completed separately online. Law schools receive your writing sample with your score report, so schools can read it even though it carries no numeric weight.
