Top 50 US Law Schools

The top 50 US law schools are the fifty highest-ranked ABA-approved schools, but the smart way to use the list is to build a balanced application slate from it. Compare your LSAT and GPA to each school's medians, then split targets into reach, target, and likely (median LSATs across the top 50 run from the low 160s up to about 175, per the 2025 ABA Standard 509 reports; each school's median GPA is in its own 509 report).

How do you use the top 50 law schools to build an application list?

The top 50 US law schools work best as a menu you filter with your own numbers. Compare your LSAT and GPA to each school's published medians, then sort schools into reach (below one or both medians), target (around both), and likely (above both). This turns a static ranking into a personal plan and keeps you from applying only to schools where your odds are long. The medians come from each school's ABA Standard 509 report.

What are the top 50 US law schools?

The top 50 US law schools are the fifty highest-ranked ABA-approved schools in the U.S. News list, from the T14 down through strong national and regional schools. The current ranked order is led by Stanford 1st, Chicago and Yale tied 2nd, and Penn and Virginia tied 4th, and runs to a three-way tie at 49th (Indiana-Bloomington, Temple, and Villanova), per U.S. News 2026-27 (via LSD.law). Use the ranking to assemble your menu, but pull each school's medians and outcomes from its ABA disclosures before deciding.

How many of the top 50 should you apply to?

Most law school applicants apply to roughly 8 to 12 schools, spread across reach, target, and likely categories. Drawing that list from the top 50 gives you a mix of ambitious and safer options without spreading applications too thin. Weight the list toward schools in the region where you want to practice, since hiring outside the T14 is largely local, and factor in scholarship potential where your numbers beat a school's medians.

How are the top 50 ranked?

U.S. News weighs peer and lawyer-judge reputation surveys, incoming LSAT and GPA medians, graduate employment, bar passage, and per-student spending, with weights that change each cycle and are published in the U.S. News Best Law Schools methodology. Because small gaps separate adjacent schools, treat a few places of rank as roughly equivalent and let fit, outcomes, and cost break the tie.

Frequently asked questions

How many law schools should you apply to?

Most law school applicants apply to roughly 8 to 12 schools, split across reach, target, and likely categories based on how their LSAT and GPA compare to each school's medians. Drawing that list from the top 50 gives you real options without over-applying. Anchor each label to the school's ABA 509 medians, which each school publishes in its 2025 ABA Standard 509 report, rather than to rank alone.

What are the T14 law schools?

The T14 refers to the fourteen law schools that have effectively always ranked in the U.S. News top 14: Yale, Stanford, Chicago, Columbia, Harvard, Penn, NYU, Virginia, Berkeley, Michigan, Duke, Northwestern, Cornell, and Georgetown. They anchor the top of the top 50 and hire nationally. Their internal order changes yearly; in U.S. News 2026-27 it runs Stanford 1st; Chicago and Yale tied 2nd; Penn and Virginia tied 4th; Harvard 6th; Duke and NYU tied 7th; Columbia, Northwestern, and Michigan tied 9th; Cornell tied 13th; Berkeley tied 16th; and Georgetown tied 18th, per U.S. News 2026-27.

What are the best law schools?

The schools most often called the best are the T14; in the U.S. News 2026-27 list the top five are Stanford 1st, Chicago and Yale tied 2nd, and Penn and Virginia tied 4th, per U.S. News 2026-27. For any individual, the best school is the one where your LSAT and GPA are competitive and that places graduates where you want to work.

How do law school rankings work?

Law school rankings come from private publishers, chiefly U.S. News, not from the ABA. U.S. News converts reputation surveys, LSAT and GPA medians, employment and bar-passage outcomes, and per-student spending into a single score and rank. The weighting is published in the U.S. News Best Law Schools methodology and revised from cycle to cycle, so a school can shift several places year to year.
