LSAT conditional reasoning is worth learning properly and worth stopping once you have. You need two operations, the contrapositive and chaining, and one habit: notate the sentence containing if, only, or unless rather than the whole stimulus. Everything past that is decoration.
Conditional logic is the study of statements of the form if this, then that. On the LSAT it matters because a large share of Logical Reasoning turns on one relationship: which term guarantees which other term.
A conditional has two halves. The sufficient condition is the trigger, the thing that if present guarantees the other. The necessary condition is the requirement, the thing that must be present for the trigger to hold.
Write it with an arrow. If a case is heard by the full court, then at least seven judges sat becomes heard by full court leads to at least seven judges. The arrow points from guarantee to requirement, and it only ever points one way.
The first is the contrapositive: flip the terms and negate both. From heard by full court leads to at least seven judges you get fewer than seven judges leads to not heard by full court. That is the same statement, not a new one, and it is where most correct inferences live.
The second is chaining. If A leads to B and B leads to C, then A leads to C. Two conditionals chain only when the necessary condition of one is the sufficient condition of the other, and checking that match is what stops invalid chains.
Everything else people teach about conditionals on this test is decoration. Two operations, used carefully, cover the ground.

Reversal treats the necessary condition as if it were sufficient. From heard by full court leads to at least seven judges, reversal concludes that seven judges sitting means the full court heard it. Nothing licenses that.
Negation, sometimes called denying the antecedent, negates both halves without flipping them. From the same statement it concludes that if the full court did not hear the case then fewer than seven judges sat. Also unlicensed, and it is the same error wearing a different hat.
The contrapositive is the only move that does both things at once, flip and negate, and it is the only one that is valid. If you can produce a contrapositive on demand you have most of what this topic is worth.
Honestly, less than the prep industry implies, and more than the anti-diagramming camp concedes. The useful answer is by question type rather than by temperament.
Diagram nearly always on sufficient assumption, must be true, and parallel reasoning questions. These are mechanical, the correct answer is decided by form, and notation outperforms careful reading because it externalizes relations your ear gets wrong.
Diagram rarely on strengthen, weaken, flaw, method and paradox questions. Those turn on argument evaluation rather than on formal validity, and notating them converts a thinking problem into a bookkeeping problem.
In the middle sit necessary assumption and principle questions, where a partial diagram of just the conditional sentence is usually the right amount. The rule of thumb: notate the sentence that contains the conditional language, not the whole stimulus.
Take this sentence, written for this example: A grant application is considered complete only if it includes both a budget and two letters of support.
Only if introduces the necessary condition, so complete leads to budget and two letters. Reversal would say that a budget and two letters make the application complete, which the sentence does not claim; there may be other requirements.
The contrapositive negates a conjunction, which becomes a disjunction: no budget or fewer than two letters leads to not complete. Missing either one is enough. That last step is the one people skip, and it is where the answer usually is.
A weekend, then maintenance. Conditional notation is a small, closed skill with a hard ceiling: once you can convert and contrapose without hesitating, more drilling adds nothing, and time spent there is time not spent on the argument-evaluation types that make up the bulk of the section.
That is consistent with what the intervention research finds about volume generally. Across 28 studies and more than 16,000 participants, neither contact hours at p = .489 nor program duration at p = .314 predicted outcomes, per Hao and colleagues (2025), Review of Educational Research (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.3102/00346543251360775). Hours are not the lever.
Practically: learn the table above, drill twenty conversions until they are automatic, then stop and only notate inside real questions.

Negate the term that is not attached to unless and make it the sufficient condition. No ticket unless you booked becomes did not book leads to no ticket.
No, and treating it as one causes errors. It is the same statement rewritten, which is exactly why it is safe to use and why correct answers so often hide in it.
