A law school scholarship negotiation email works because of the number inside it rather than the prose around it. Across the 58 schools in our verified set, the median share of students receiving a grant from the school is 86 percent. Verified July 2026.
Four things, in this order: that you want to attend, what the competing number is, what would let you say yes, and by when you need an answer. Everything else is padding; The order matters because an aid officer reads the first line to decide whether this is a live candidate or a fishing expedition. Verified July 2026.
Lead with intent and the rest gets read.
The competing number belongs in its own sentence with the school named. A vague reference to a better offer elsewhere gives the reader nothing to take to a committee.
The ask is a figure rather than a feeling. Asking to be reconsidered is not an ask, and it is the most common reason a negotiation email produces a polite nothing.
The 509 tells you whether discounting at that school is routine or exceptional. Across our verified set of 58 schools the median grant reach is 86 percent of students, and 21 of those schools reach 90 percent or more. Verified July 2026.

Every ABA-accredited school publishes grant reach and median grant size in its own Standard 509 report, and we hold 58 of them in LOVARE_SCHOOL_DATA_SHEET.xlsx, retrieved July 31, 2026. Verified July 2026.
The spread is enormous. Southern University reaches 20 percent of students and Catholic reaches 99 percent, from each school's own 509 report, retrieved July 31, 2026. Verified July 2026.
Median grant size runs from $7,363 at Texas Southern to $60,000 at St. John's, with a middle value of $30,000, our arithmetic on the 509 figures in our data sheet, retrieved July 31, 2026. Verified July 2026.
The office that issued the award letter, not the admissions officer who signed your acceptance. Those are frequently different people and only one of them controls the number; Award letters name a financial aid office or a scholarship committee. Verified July 2026.
That name is on the letter for a reason and it is the address that produces an answer.
Where a single admissions office issues both, send one email rather than two. Parallel emails to two addresses at the same school read as pressure and get merged into one file anyway.
Copy nobody. A dean copied on a first ask is a signal that you expect to be refused, and it removes the reader's ability to say yes quietly.
Yes, with the school named and the figure stated, because an unnamed competing offer cannot be checked and is therefore treated as absent. Attach the letter; The person reading your email has to justify the increase to somebody. Verified July 2026.
A named school and a stated figure is a document they can forward; a paraphrase is not.
Attach the award letter itself as a PDF. That single step converts your claim into their evidence and costs you nothing.
Never invent or inflate a competing figure. It is checkable, schools in the same market talk, and the downside is losing the seat rather than losing the argument.
Write a shorter email that asks about need-based review and about scholarships you were not automatically considered for. Do not manufacture leverage you do not have; Without a competing number your email is a request for reconsideration rather than a negotiation, and framing it honestly as that gets it read rather than binned. Verified July 2026.
The one true lever left is that grant reach is broad at most schools, at a median of 86 percent across 58 verified 509 reports in our data sheet, retrieved July 31, 2026, so an unfunded admit is often an oversight rather than a verdict. Verified July 2026.
Name a specific changed circumstance if one exists. A new figure of any kind, income, dependants, a cost you did not report, gives the office something procedural to act on.
Under two hundred words in the body, with the award letter attached. Every additional paragraph moves the number further from the top of the message and closer to being skimmed past; Aid officers read these in volume during a compressed window. Verified July 2026.
Length is not read as seriousness; it is read as an unedited draft.
One paragraph of intent, one of the competing figure, one of the ask and the date. Three short paragraphs is a complete negotiation email.
Gratitude belongs in the first line and nowhere else. Repeated thanks reads as an apology for asking, and it invites the answer an apology deserves.
Ask for the competing figure, not for more than it. The credible ask is the one you can act on, and a figure above your best offer tells the reader you are shopping rather than choosing; Matching is a decision an aid officer can make inside existing authority. Verified July 2026.
Exceeding usually requires a committee and a reason you have not given them.
Where the competing school is materially cheaper on total cost rather than on grant, say so and state the cost difference instead. That reframes the ask around a number they can verify.
After July 1, 2026 the residual matters more than the headline, because federal borrowing for professional students is capped at $50,000 a year and Grad PLUS is phased out for new borrowers (https://sfs.harvard.edu/changes-federal-student-loans), retrieved July 31, 2026. Verified July 2026.
No deadline you cannot honour, no reference to rankings, no threat to withdraw, and no figure you have not been offered in writing. Each of those converts a routine request into a closed file; A manufactured deadline is the most common self-inflicted wound. Verified July 2026.
If you name a date and then keep negotiating past it, every later message is discounted.
Rankings are not a lever with the person reading your email. They did not set them and cannot spend them.
A withdrawal threat converts a negotiation into a decision, and the school gets to make it. Say what would let you say yes instead.
Expect one of three answers: a match, a partial increase, or a documented no. All three are useful, and the documented no is the one that tells you where you actually stand; Reply to a no with thanks and a question about whether the decision can be revisited if your circumstances change. Verified July 2026.
A partial increase is the modal outcome at schools that discount broadly, because the office is balancing your file against a fixed pool rather than against you personally.
That keeps the file open without asking twice.
Do not send a second ask inside the same week. One follow-up, after a stated interval, is the whole cadence a first-round negotiation supports.
No school publishes a success rate for scholarship negotiation, no ABA disclosure records one, and any percentage you have seen quoted for it has no published source. The Standard 509 report publishes grant reach and grant quartiles and nothing about appeals, which is why this page reasons from reach rather than from outcomes, retrieved July 31, 2026. Verified July 2026.
That absence is the honest boundary of this page. We can tell you how commonly schools discount and we cannot tell you how commonly they increase an award on request.
Anyone publishing a negotiation success rate has either surveyed a self-selected group or made it up. Ask which before you believe it.
Every figure on this scholarship negotiation page carries a Verified July 2026 stamp because a dated stamp is the only honest way to publish a number that moves. Each source below was retrieved in July 2026 and is linked in full rather than named vaguely, so nothing here is modelled, averaged or inferred.

No, but without one it is a reconsideration request rather than a negotiation. Grant reach is broad at most schools, a median of 86 percent across 58 verified 509 reports. Verified July 2026.
The office named on your award letter, which is often financial aid rather than admissions. Send one email and copy nobody. Verified July 2026.
The competing figure, not more than it. Matching sits inside an aid officer's existing authority; exceeding usually needs a committee and a reason. Verified July 2026.
No school and no ABA disclosure publishes that figure. Any success rate you have seen quoted has no published source behind it. Verified July 2026.
Before you draft anything, pull the grant reach and median grant for every school that has admitted you. That table decides the email. The Lovare Diagnostic takes about fifteen minutes and returns your own numbers against published school data rather than a single probability, and it is free.
