If they say no, ask whether a colleague is looking. Faculty know who is hiring and that referral is worth more than another cold email.

Is a research assistant position paid?

Is an RA position better than a 1L firm job?

For a student aiming at clerkships or academia yes, and for a student aiming at a large firm no. That is a real fork rather than a matter of taste, because the two routes reward different evidence and you cannot build both at once. Verified July 2026.
