How Many Law Schools to Apply to

A typical law school applicant files 6 to 12 applications, balanced across reach, target, and safety schools chosen by comparing personal LSAT and GPA numbers to each school's published medians. Fewer than about six can leave you without a safety net, while many more than a dozen often adds cost and essays without improving your outcome. Balance beats volume.

How many law schools should you apply to?

A typical law school applicant files 6 to 12 applications. The number is a range, not a rule, and the right figure for you comes from covering reach, target, and safety schools that fit your LSAT and GPA against each school's medians. Fewer than about six can leave you exposed, while many more than a dozen rarely improves results.

Why not just apply to as many schools as possible?

Applying to far more than a dozen schools spreads your time, essays, and fees thin while adding little to your odds, because admissions still turns on your numbers versus each school's medians. Volume cannot rescue an application whose LSAT and GPA fall well below a school's medians. A tight, well-matched list usually outperforms a long, generic one.

How do reach, target, and safety schools fit into the count?

Within your total, balance the three tiers so no single outcome sinks your cycle:

  1. Reach schools, where your LSAT or GPA is below the median
  2. Target schools, where your numbers sit near the medians
  3. Safety schools, where your numbers clear the 75th percentile

Keeping at least two safeties is the single most important part of the split.

How do you land on your final number?

Set your number by starting from your list of genuine-fit schools, then trimming duplicates until every application is one you would accept. Confirm your numbers clear the safety tier for two or more schools before finalizing. Lovare's free admissions calculator maps your LSAT and GPA to each school's medians so your final count is grounded in real odds.

Frequently asked questions

How many law schools should you apply to?

A typical applicant files 6 to 12 law school applications, spread across reach, target, and safety tiers based on how their LSAT and GPA compare to each school's medians. Aim for the smallest list that still covers all three tiers and includes at least two safeties, since extra applications beyond a dozen rarely change the outcome.

What are my chances of getting into law school?

Your odds depend mostly on how your LSAT and GPA compare to each school's published medians. Applicants at or above both a school's median LSAT and median GPA are admitted at high rates, while those below both face long odds. Compare your two numbers to each target school's ABA 509 medians to estimate your chances.

What GPA and LSAT do I need for law school?

There is no single required GPA or LSAT. Each ABA-approved school publishes 25th, 50th, and 75th percentile figures, and your goal is to meet or beat a target school's medians. Because schools read GPA and LSAT together, strength on one number can partly offset a weaker figure on the other rather than acting as a cutoff.
