GW Law School Tuition and Cost of Attendance: The Full Debt Math

Current GW law school tuition is $78,060 for 2026-27, inside a total annual cost of attendance of $114,097, per GW's posted budget. Across three years that is a $342,291 sticker before any aid, and about $258,291 at the median grant, by straight multiplication. Here is the full debt math, honestly laid out.

How much does GW Law cost?

Two numbers matter and they are not interchangeable. Tuition is what the school charges; cost of attendance is what the year actually costs, with housing, food, books, insurance, and fees included.

Note the year-over-year tuition move from $75,420 to $78,060, about 3.5 percent by our arithmetic. Budget for increases in years two and three rather than freezing year-one prices in your projection.

What is the total cost of attendance at GW?

$114,097 per year for a full-time student in 2026-27, per GW's own budget. That is the number your borrowing is actually sized against, because rent in Washington does not bill through the bursar but gets borrowed all the same.

GW also runs a part-time JD, which restructures rather than reduces cost: tuition spreads across more years while living costs continue, and current part-time pricing is on GW's tuition page. Our data layer prices the full-time program.

The three-year debt projection

Straight arithmetic from the verified figures, before interest, aid changes, or cost growth. These are planning anchors, not loan quotes.

ScenarioAnnual net COAThree-year totalSticker, no grant$114,097$342,291Median grant ($28,000/yr)$86,097$258,291

Grant figure: GW 2025 ABA 509, median award among the 77 percent of students receiving grants. Projections are our multiplication of disclosed annual figures.

Interest makes every real balance higher than these totals, since graduate borrowing accrues from disbursement; check current federal rates before modeling, as they reset annually. And confirm your grant's renewal conditions in writing, because a scholarship that dies with a GPA stipulation changes the whole table.

Is GW Law worth the debt?

The honest frame: a quarter-million-dollar median-case cost against a class where 32.5 percent reached firms of 101+ attorneys and 96.8 percent were employed at ten months, per the class of 2025 ABA summary. Those outcomes are real, and they are not a coin you can count on flipping your way.

Law salaries are bimodal: large-firm pay sits at a public market scale that services this debt on a normal timeline, while government and public interest salaries, which absorb much of GW's big DC placement share, do not. Which side of that divide you land on is substantially set by grades, not intentions.

So the debt is rational if you would take the non-BigLaw outcome at this price, or if your grant moves the math. That second lever is negotiable before you enroll, which is exactly what our GW scholarships guide is for, with the outcome detail in GW's employment statistics.

Where the borrowing actually goes

Tuition is the visible line, but the gap between $78,060 and $114,097 is the part students underestimate: housing, food, books, insurance, fees, and transportation in a capital-city market. GW itemizes the components on its cost page; the composite is what you plan against.

Living costs are also the one line you partially control. The difference between a shared apartment and living alone in DC, compounded across three years with borrowed money, is a real number worth an honest conversation with yourself before orientation.

Budget the summers too: 1L summer positions vary from paid to unpaid, and bar-study season after 3L is months of expenses with no income. Neither appears in any school's COA table.

How the borrowing is structured

Federal graduate borrowing changed on July 1, 2026 and older guidance is now wrong. Professional-degree students are capped at $50,000 a year and $200,000 in aggregate, and Grad PLUS, which previously allowed borrowing up to a school's full certified cost of attendance, was eliminated for new borrowers. The caps come from the Reimagining and Improving Student Education final rule, published May 1, 2026 and effective July 1, 2026, which attributes them to the Working Families Tax Cuts Act (https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/05/01/2026-08556/reimagining-and-improving-student-education-federal-student-loan-program-final-regulations).

Against GW's $114,097 cost of attendance that leaves a gap of $64,097 a year, our arithmetic, which has to come from scholarship, savings, family or private credit. Existing borrowers who were already enrolled before July 1, 2026 keep Grad PLUS eligibility if they stay in the same program at the same school.

Rates reset each year and differ by loan type, so check current federal rates rather than trusting any static page, including this one.

Two structural facts matter more than the rate decimals. Interest accrues from disbursement while you study, so the balance at graduation exceeds the sum you borrowed; and federal loans carry income-driven repayment and public-service forgiveness options that private refinancing forfeits.

That last point is live at GW specifically, because its placement tilts toward DC government and public-sector work where forgiveness programs do the heavy lifting. Keep the federal structure until your first job makes the tradeoff obvious.

Questions to put to the aid office before depositing

Four emails worth sending. What are my grant's renewal conditions across all three years, in writing? Does the award adjust if my residency, enrollment status, or external scholarships change?

What did tuition do in each of the last three years, so the projection uses GW's own trajectory rather than a frozen number? And what is the certified COA for the program I am actually entering, full-time or part-time?

Schools answer these questions routinely; applicants simply fail to ask them. The asking costs a week and prices the biggest purchase of your twenties correctly.

The DC cost picture, side by side

Cost decisions are comparative, so here is the composite figure for the three DC schools most often cross-shopped, from each school's disclosures.

SchoolAnnual cost of attendanceGeorgetown$124,600 (2026-27, school COA page)GW$114,097 (2026-27, school COA page)Americanest: ~$103,004 (derived from 509 components)

Sources: school cost pages and 2025 ABA 509 reports, verified July 26, 2026. American publishes components rather than one figure; the estimate is their sum.

Sticker gaps of roughly $10,000 per tier look decisive until grants enter: Georgetown's median grant is $35,000, GW's is $28,000, and American's is $40,000, per the same 509 reports. Net price at your actual offers, not sticker, is the only number that should decide anything.

That is also the argument for holding multiple DC offers into negotiation season. The spread across these three schools is wide enough that one reconsideration email can outweigh a year of coupon-clipping.

FAQ

How much does GW Law cost per year?

Tuition is $78,060 for 2026-27, and the full cost of attendance is $114,097 per year, per GW's posted budget.

What does three years at GW Law cost?

$342,291 at sticker and about $258,291 at the median $28,000 annual grant, by straight multiplication of disclosed figures, before interest and year-over-year increases.

Is GW Law worth the debt?

It depends on your outcome tolerance: 32.5 percent of the class of 2025 reached 101+ lawyer firms and 96.8 percent were employed at ten months, but the salary distribution is bimodal and DC government pay does not service sticker debt comfortably.

Grants: 77 percent of students hold one, the median is $28,000, and awards can be negotiated with competing offers before you deposit.
