Does Honors Classes Boost Your GPA

It depends on the scale. On a weighted high-school GPA, honors and AP courses can add points and push the total above 4.0. On an unweighted scale, and in LSAC's standard recalculation used for law school admissions, an A is worth 4.0 whether or not the class was honors, so that boost disappears.

Does taking honors classes raise your GPA?

Taking honors classes raises your GPA only under a weighting system. Weighted GPAs, common in high schools, give honors and AP courses extra points, so a weighted average can exceed 4.0. Unweighted GPAs, and the recalculated GPA that LSAC produces for law school, treat every A as 4.0, which means the honors label adds no numerical value there.

Weighted versus unweighted GPA and where honors classes matter

The difference between weighted and unweighted GPA is the entire reason this question has two answers. The list below shows how an honors A is counted under each system.

  • Weighted high-school GPA: an honors or AP A may count as 4.5 or 5.0, raising the average above 4.0.
  • Unweighted GPA: an honors A counts as 4.0, identical to a regular A.
  • LSAC law school GPA: a standard 4.0-scale conversion with no rigor bonus, so honors and regular A grades are equal.

Do law schools care that a class was honors?

Law schools do not add GPA points for honors coursework, because they rely on the LSAC-recalculated GPA, which is unweighted. They can, however, see the rigor of your transcript qualitatively, and a demanding course load can support the overall impression of your file. The number itself, though, reflects your grades, not the honors designation.

Is it worth taking honors classes for your GPA?

Honors classes are worth taking for the depth, the recommendations they can generate, and the preparation they provide, not for a GPA increase that LSAC will not recognize. If an honors section puts a strong grade at risk, weigh that against the fact that the recalculated GPA counts the grade, not the label. Protecting high grades matters more to your law school GPA than chasing an honors weighting.

Frequently asked questions

Does pass/fail affect GPA?

In most systems a pass/fail course does not affect your GPA, since a Pass has no grade points. It remains visible on your transcript, and LSAC follows its own conversion for the law school GPA, generally leaving out a plain Pass while counting a failing grade that carries points.

How does LSAC calculate GPA?

LSAC converts every undergraduate grade to a single standard 4.0 scale through the Credential Assembly Service, applying no weighting for honors or AP courses. Because it includes failed and repeated courses that a college may have replaced, the resulting cumulative GPA can sit below your registrar's number.

What GPA do you need for law school?

There is no universal minimum; each ABA-approved school reports 25th, 50th, and 75th percentile GPAs, and matching a school's median makes you competitive there. Since LSAC uses an unweighted recalculation, focus on strong grades across your transcript and a solid LSAT rather than on honors weighting.
