If your child is stuck at a 155, 160, 165, or any other LSAT score, do not start by choosing a new prep company. Start by diagnosing the plateau. The same score can be produced by completely different underlying problems, and those problems require different interventions.

A plateau becomes expensive when the family responds by increasing volume without increasing information: more practice tests, more hours, another subscription, another tutor, another official registration. The better move is to turn the plateau into a set of testable hypotheses.
One disappointing test is not a plateau. Scores naturally fluctuate. We become more interested when several recent official practice tests or equivalent timed samples cluster in a similar range and the student's error pattern is not improving.
Before changing anything, collect at least:
Now the number becomes evidence rather than a verdict.
Lovare separates the plateau into four possible limiting systems: Knowledge, Explanatory Mastery, Execution, and Load/State. More than one can be active at the same time, but it is useful to ask which is primary.
The student does not yet possess a required concept or distinction. Examples:
Signature: the problem persists even when time pressure is removed, and the student cannot accurately state the relevant concept.
The student has seen the idea but cannot generate or defend it independently. They often say, "I understand when I see the explanation." That is a warning sign.
Signature: after reviewing a question, the student can recognize the correct reasoning but cannot teach the concept back, create a fresh example, or explain why a nearby wrong answer fails.
Intervention: retrieval, teach-back, misconception repair, example generation, and transfer to new questions.
The student knows more than the timed score reveals. The limiting issue is carrying the method into real conditions.
Signature: a meaningful timed/untimed gap, late-section rushing, poor skipping decisions, answer changes, fixation on one hard question, or accuracy that degrades as the clock tightens.
Intervention: pacing rules, question triage, timed micro-sets, section architecture, confidence calibration, and full-test execution practice after the underlying method is stable.
The student may be overtrained, exhausted, anxious, distracted, or carrying too much concurrent academic/work stress.
Signature: knowledge appears intact but performance becomes volatile, full tests provoke increasing avoidance, scores deteriorate as volume increases, or the student cannot reproduce skills that were recently stable.
Intervention: reduce noise, adjust load, stabilize routines, and distinguish ordinary test pressure from issues that may need qualified clinical support.
At roughly this stage, many students still have meaningful conceptual and process gains available. But it is a mistake to assume every 155 scorer needs a full curriculum restart.
A student may already understand easier and medium questions while losing points through one or two recurring reasoning families. Another may know the content but never finish sections. Another may be racing through reading passages without a model of structure.
Our first question would be: What does the student do differently on questions they miss compared with questions they get right?
If that difference is conceptual, teach. If it is procedural, train execution. If it is state-dependent, change conditions.
In the low 160s, broad curriculum review often has diminishing returns unless the student's foundations are genuinely incomplete. The missed points may be concentrated in a smaller number of high-value patterns.
Common possibilities include:
The student may need less content and more precision.
At higher scores, the remaining errors are fewer, so the analysis has to become more granular. A student can lose several points from a small number of behaviors: one rushed passage, two avoidable answer changes, a recurring subtle flaw, or spending four minutes on a question that should have been skipped and returned to.
This is where generic "advanced LSAT" advice can be especially inefficient. We want to know the student's specific error signature.
Blind review or untimed review is not a magic score predictor, but it is diagnostically useful.
If a student scores 160 timed and can carefully produce 169-level accuracy untimed, the ceiling appears higher than the timed score. That suggests the student may benefit from execution work once we confirm the untimed reasoning is genuinely independent rather than explanation-assisted.
If the student scores 160 timed and 161 untimed, removing time does not repair much. That points more strongly toward knowledge or mastery.
The point is not the exact numerical gap. The point is whether pressure is causing errors that disappear when the student has enough cognitive space.
LSAC recommends official timed practice because it familiarizes students with the mechanics, timing, and interface of the real exam. We agree. But full tests are principally measurement and integration tools.
If a student repeatedly misses the same reasoning relationship, another full test merely gives the weakness another opportunity to appear.
A better cycle can be:
One of the strongest checks for false mastery is to ask the student to teach the concept aloud without notes.
For example, after a Weaken module, can they explain:
If not, returning to hard timed questions may be premature.
Lovare's audio teach-back loop is intentionally repetitive: teach → analyze against a human-approved mastery map → identify exact gaps → repair → teach again → compare → verify transfer.
A correct answer guessed with low confidence is not the same evidence as a correct answer reached through a stable method.
Parents do not need to review question logs, but the tutor or system should. A mature analysis distinguishes:
Those categories tell us where future errors are likely to come from.
LSAC itself notes that test-day stress and unexpected logistics can affect the testing experience, and recommends familiarizing candidates with the interface and procedures. That is one reason realistic practice matters.
But "anxiety" should not become a catch-all explanation. Ask whether the student's behavior changes under pressure in observable ways.
Examples:
If symptoms appear significant beyond normal test stress, involve an appropriate health professional. Test prep can support performance habits; it should not pretend to provide clinical diagnosis or treatment.
LSAC allows multiple attempts within published limits, and many test takers do improve on a retake. But some do not.
Before registering again, we would want three things:
"We hope test day goes better" is not a retake strategy.
If knowledge is weak: structured concept learning + simple examples + targeted official questions.
If explanatory mastery is weak: audio teach-back + misconception repair + fresh example generation + transfer testing.
If execution is weak: timed micro-sets + pacing/skip rules + confidence calibration + sections + full tests.
If load/state is weak: reduce unnecessary volume + stabilize conditions + rebuild realistic exposure gradually + seek qualified clinical support where appropriate.
Private help is most defensible when the family has enough evidence to know the current plan is not working but lacks the expertise to explain why. It is also reasonable when the timeline is short enough that continued trial-and-error has become costly.
Private help is less defensible when the student is still improving independently, has barely begun official practice, or does not want the intervention.
There is no fixed number. We care about a repeated range across enough comparable official work to separate pattern from ordinary score noise. Three to five recent meaningful samples often give more information than one isolated test.
Potentially, if recent evidence does not support readiness and postponing fits the broader admissions timeline. Registration fees and sunk preparation time should not force a strategically poor test date.
If the tutor cannot articulate the plateau, has not changed the intervention despite repeated evidence of failure, or cannot show what the student is learning between full tests, a change may be reasonable. A new tutor should still begin with diagnosis rather than assuming the old tutor's theory was wrong.
Large improvements happen, but there is no responsible way to guarantee one. The size and speed of an improvement depend on the student's starting profile, underlying gaps, consistency, time, and execution.
