The best law schools for california, ranked by the share of the class of 2025 employed there. UCLA leads at 80.1 percent, then USC at 79.7 percent and Berkeley at 64.0 percent. Stanford places lower than all three, which is the most counterintuitive row in the table.
Share is graduates employed in California divided by total graduates, from each school's ABA employment summary. Stanford reports by region rather than state, so its figure covers the SF Bay Area only and understates statewide placement.

The three California schools, unsurprisingly, and by very wide margins. UCLA sent 266 of 332 graduates to California, USC 181 of 227, and Berkeley 181 of 283.
Stanford is the row that needs explaining. Its 50 SF Bay Area placements from a class of 190 look low, but Stanford reports employment by region rather than by state, so its true California share is higher than the table shows and it is not directly comparable to the others.
Outside California, the strongest feeders are Harvard, Columbia, NYU, Michigan, Northwestern and Duke, all of which send 20 to 30 graduates west. Those are real numbers from national schools rather than California pipelines.
If you are certain about California, UCLA and Berkeley are the strongest combination of placement share and cost. UCLA's resident cost of attendance is $99,130 and Berkeley's is $108,562, both far below the private California option.
USC places at nearly the same rate as UCLA, at 79.7 percent, with the highest large-firm rate of the three at 67.8 percent, and a much higher cost of attendance at $118,246.
Berkeley is the strongest choice for Bay Area technology and IP work specifically, on the strength of the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology, which our IP table ranks first.
Residency is the lever nobody plans for. UCLA and Berkeley both charge substantially less to California residents, and the difference across three years is large enough to change which school is affordable.

California administers its own bar rather than the Uniform Bar Exam, which means a California career generally requires sitting a California-specific exam regardless of where you study.
That is a neutral fact for California schools and a real consideration for anyone planning to move west from a UBE state, since it constrains portability in a way most markets do not. Factor it into the decision alongside placement share.

We did not use rankings, surveys or reputation. Where a figure required arithmetic, such as a percentage or a net cost, we state that it is our arithmetic and give the inputs so you can check it.
Where we could not verify something, the table says so rather than filling the gap with an estimate. That is why some rows read not published or not verified instead of carrying a number that would look more complete and mean less.
It cannot tell you your outcome. Every figure here describes a class of several hundred people, and your position inside that distribution is set by first-year grades that have not happened yet.
It cannot price your offer, because aid depends on where your numbers sit against each school's medians rather than on the median award. Half of every school's grant recipients got less than the figure shown.
And it cannot capture fit, culture, or whether you will do your best work in that building for three years. Those are discoverable only by visiting and asking current students specific questions, which is worth more than any table on this site.
