Application Deadlines for Law Schools

Application deadlines for law schools usually fall between the winter and early spring for a fall entering class, but each ABA school sets its own dates and most admit on a rolling basis. Priority, regular, and early decision deadlines differ, and applying well before the deadline improves your odds. each school's current deadline (see its admissions page)

When are law school application deadlines?

Most ABA-approved law schools set their regular application deadlines somewhere from the winter into the early spring for a class entering the following fall. Because schools read on a rolling basis, the posted deadline is the last day to apply, not the best day. Each school publishes its own dates, so the only authoritative deadline is the one on your target school's admissions page. each school's current deadline (see its admissions page)

What are the different types of law school deadlines?

Law schools often list several deadlines, and they do not mean the same thing. The table explains the common types.

Deadline typeWhat it meansPriority deadlineApply by this date for fullest scholarship and admission consideration.Regular deadlineThe final date to submit a standard application.Early decision deadlineAn earlier date for a binding commitment to attend if admitted.Rolling cutoffApplications reviewed as they arrive until the class fills.

Why does applying before the deadline matter?

In rolling admissions, seats and scholarship money are awarded as strong files arrive, so the pool of both shrinks over the cycle. An applicant who submits in the fall is often read against a nearly empty class, while the same file in March competes for the last few seats. Meeting the deadline keeps you eligible, but submitting early is what actually improves your odds.

How should you plan around law school deadlines?

Work backward from the earliest deadline on your list, then subtract time for the LSAT, CAS processing, essays, and letters. Because CAS needs time to assemble your transcripts and letters, aim to have everything ready weeks before any date you care about. Keep one calendar with every school's priority, regular, and early decision dates so nothing slips. each school's current deadline (see its admissions page)

Frequently asked questions

When is the deadline to apply to law school?

Most law schools set regular application deadlines from the winter into early spring for the following fall's entering class, but the exact date differs at every school. Many also list an earlier priority deadline for scholarships. Always confirm the specific date on each target school's admissions page. each school's current deadline (see its admissions page)

What is the difference between a priority and regular deadline?

A priority deadline is the date to apply by for the fullest scholarship and admission consideration, while the regular deadline is the final date a school accepts standard applications. Applying by the priority deadline generally improves both your odds and your aid, since rolling admissions rewards earlier complete files.

Is it bad to apply right at the deadline?

Applying right at the deadline is allowed but rarely ideal, because rolling admissions means most seats and scholarships are already committed by then. Your application competes for the last remaining spots against a nearly full class. If possible, submit a complete, polished file weeks or months before the posted deadline.

Do all law schools have the same application deadline?

No, each ABA-approved law school sets its own deadlines, and they can differ by weeks or months. Schools may also list separate priority, regular, and early decision dates. Never assume one school's deadline applies to another; check each school's admissions page and track the dates in a single calendar. each school's current deadline (see its admissions page)
