The philosophy behind the list, why rest outranks doctrine and systems outrank supplements, is in the summer before 1L. This page is the execution layer, four categories, each of which can be finished in a weekend.

Logistics: zero the administration

• Laptop meets your school's exam software specifications, checked against the actual published requirements, with a working charger and a backup plan for exam day.
• School email, student portal, course management system, and library accounts all logged in and tested, credentials stored somewhere you will find them.
• Financial aid finalized, first disbursement dates known, and a small emergency buffer set aside, because textbook and deposit surprises cluster in August.
• Housing settled and the commute rehearsed once at the real hour, with parking or transit passes sorted.
• Health insurance active, a local doctor and pharmacy identified, prescriptions transferred.

Systems: decide before the flood

• Calendar chosen, one calendar, not three, with a standing plan to enter every syllabus date the day each syllabus drops.
• Note structure decided in advance, the two column method from how to take notes, with a folder per course and a consistent file naming habit.
• The Sunday planning ritual pre committed: twenty minutes, weekly, per time management, placed on the calendar now as a recurring block.
• Print and scan access figured out, campus or home, because legal writing courses still move paper.
• The free tool suite bookmarked: the curve and GPA calculators, the study planner, and the outline shells you will copy in week five.

Skills: the short list that transfers

• Typing speed to sixty words per minute or better, using any free trainer, fifteen minutes daily; below that threshold, this is the highest yield hour of the month.
• One case briefed with the eight field template, using any famous public opinion, for format familiarity only.
• One book on legal thinking and exams read, Getting to Maybe being the standard pick.
• Your school's academic regulations skimmed, grading curve, exam rules, honor code, because knowing how the curve works before orientation puts you ahead of most of your section, and the honor code is the one document whose ignorance is never excused.
• Daily long form reading, an hour of dense nonfiction, as stamina training for the load described in how to read a case.

Life: the load bearing category

• Sleep schedule shifted to match your class schedule, started two weeks out, because a 9 am Civ Pro section attended on a 2 am summer clock is a self inflicted handicap.
• An exercise or activity anchor chosen and scheduled as recurring, the fixed point everything else flexes around.
• Two or three non law anchors protected on the calendar, the standing dinner, the weekly call, the league night, entered now so the semester builds around them.
• The workload conversation had with family and close people: what fall will look like, that slow replies are load and not distance, and when they will actually see you.
• One genuine rest block taken before the countdown ends, guilt free, as the deliberate competitive move it is.

The final two weeks: assignment watch

Professors post first assignments one to two weeks out, on the course page or by email, and some rooms cold call on them day one. Check the portals every few days, and when the assignment appears, do it properly, read with the three pass method, brief with the template, and nothing beyond it. Then walk into the first week rested, zeroed, and exactly one assignment ahead, which is the entire amount of ahead that 1L rewards.
